Martyn Harris, Chief Flight Instructor

In 1985 he earned his commercial pilot license and then his flight instructor certificate with single engine, multi engine and instrument ratings. He also has his Airline Transport Pilot certificate with three type ratings.

Martyn started instructing at Cascade Flight in 1986. In 1990 he began flying freight for Ameriflight. In 1991 he returned to Bellingham as a corporate pilot. In 2000 he began flying as flight engineer on DC-8’s for Emery Worldwide and later that year started at American Airlines first as a Boeing 727 flight engineer and then an MD-80 first officer. In January of 2005 he was furloughed from his airline job and in March he returned to his flight instructing roots when he became Chief Flight Instructor at BAS.

Jeff Eriksen, Flight Instructor
In addition to his flight instructing duties, Jeff works for BAS as a fueler and attends graduate school at Regent College. He began flying in 1995 and graduated from Moody Aviation in 1997, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Missionary Aviation Technology. In addition to an Airframe and Powerplant mechanics license, Jeff also holds a commercial pilot license with single and multi engine land, single engine sea and instrument ratings, and a certified flight instructor certificate.

Chip LaPlante, Flight Instructor
Chip has been a respected aviation resource around Bellingham Airport for more than 25 years. He started flying in the Bellingham area in February 1973 and soloed two months later. In the Spring of 1978, Chip earned his commercial certificate and supplemented his income with a weekend job flying skydivers.

Beginning in December 1978, he earned his initial flight instructor rating, closely followed by CFII, ME, MEI, SE ATP, and Part 135 VFR and IFR qualifications for single and multi-engine operations. Chip worked as a corporate pilot for a Bellingham business from July 1981 through July 1989 and earned his multi-engine ATP rating. In 2000, he assumed the student role and added his Commercial SES rating to his certificate.

Chip continues to work as a corporate pilot for businesses in Whatcom County and likes to flight instruct in his spare time.

Our flight instructors look forward to exploring our beautiful area with you by air.
